Several important auto shows have come and gone since the last installation of our blog, so we have a bit of work to do getting our readers up to speed on the latest and greatest things to come from our favorite British automaker. The Geneva Motor show came has come and gone, and with it came a new shocking vehicle from Land Rover. It was a version of the legendary Land Rover Defender, with a twist.
Officially named the Land Rover Defender All-Terrain Research Vehicle, this rugged SUV was the brand's first all-electric model. More than a cool exhibit for visitors to the auto show, the creation of this new Land Rover suggests that the company could be exploring alternative fuel option for upcoming models in the production line.
To make this the All-Terrain Research Vehicle, engineers and designers began with a Defender. They proceeded to rip out the standard diesel engine under the hood, and replaced it with an electric motor capable of producing 94 horsepower and a very surprising 243 pound-feet of torque. That motor was attached to a single-speed transmission and was powered by a large lithium-ion battery.
